Amsterdam Part Two

Welcome back to Part Two of my Amsterdam round up. If you want a recap of Part One click on the link.

Friday was possibly my favourite day in the Dam as we hired bikes from the hotel for 16 Euros and set off for the day on two wheels. We headed straight into the Vondelpark for a sunny but chilly ride around the lake before riding towards the Bloemenmarket.

The Bloemenmarket is a must see if you are in Amsterdam as it houses a collection of seemingly endless flower and souvenir stalls. It is also the Worlds only floating flower market. Cool huh?

Here you can pick up anything from tulip bulbs, to juicy green succulents to hand-painted wooden clogs. We grabbed a takeaway coffee to warm us up and spent the next hour slowly meandering through the markets.

The more and more clog stalls we came across the more I became tempted to buy a pair, and so by the end of the market I was the proud owner of a tiny pair of yellow clogs and a big smile on my face to prove it.

A few other souvenirs also fell into our bags from the Blomenmarket, including a bag of tulip bulbs for my mum and an Amsterdam fridge magnet (standard).

Next stop on the bikes was a ride to Wijdesteeg. A tiny side street just a five minute walk from Dam Square and home to some of the most vibrant and colourful street art. A multi-coloured brick road, a giant pink flamingo, a row of yellow ducks and a pint sized Einstein. What's not to love?

From here we rode north to the Amsterdam Library which offers up great panoramic views over the city. The library is free to enter so pop by and head to the 6th floor for the views.

Mid Afternoon we rode on to Rembrandtplain Square and this was one of my favourite spots from the trip. This area was once a Butter and Dairy market, but has since become home to an array of bars and restaurants which surrounds an inner square and a collection of iron statues. One of which includes the famous Dutch painter himself - Rembrandt van Rijn.

Our trusty trip advisor app then suggested we eat at De Nachtwacht (which translates to the Night Watch) and came highly recommended. The restaurant was fully booked but they did offer us up a seat at the bar area. In hindsight this was much better as we got to chat to the bar tender who recommended some great red wine for us to try. A shared rack of ribs and a lot of red wine later, we cycled home that evening feeling very full and content. Happy Anniversary to us.

On our final day in Amsterdam, the day didn't get off to the best of starts.

We had pre-booked tickets to tour Anne Franks house through tour operator - 'Get Your Guide' and told to arrive for 9am. Our meeting point was to be at the Anne Frank statue where we would be met by our guide who would issue the tickets and take us through. Sadly an hour later there was no sign of the guide and a group of 20 very cold and disappointed tourists. After contacting the tour company when we returned we were offered no explanation as to why they had cancelled the trip, but they did offer to refund our money. Needless to say that I will not be using GYG again for future travel trips. Such a disappointment!!!

However, onwards and upwards we decided next to visit the Bodyworlds exhibition. The museum houses over 200 anatomical specimens of real human bodies that have been donated for scientific purposes and reveal the true complexity and vulnerability of the human body.

After what was quite a heavy tour around the human body, we decided to lighten the mood by popping over to the nearby Grasshopper for a beer.

The Grasshopper is right on the outskirts of the red light district and so we decided on another wander around and ended up at the Condomerie. Big ones, small ones, multi-coloured ones, glow in the dark ones. This places houses them all. Go for a laugh!!

We then happened to stumble into Amsterdam's Chinatown. Red lanterns and lots of crispy ducks hanging in restaurant windows. We stopped by the temple and inhaled the wafts of incense before walking on.

We concluded our whistlestop trip to Amsterdam with a big cheesy fondue. A big old saucepan of gooey cheese topped with spices. A perfect end to a great weekend.

Amsterdam, I will be back.

Thanks for reading. Back soon.

Amsterdam Part One

Why has it taken me so long to visit Amsterdam? It's been on my travel wish list from.........well, from when I first made a list and yet I have only just got around to ticking her off my list. Crazy really when you think it takes less than an hour to fly to The Dam and flights can be found super cheap through easyjet.

We arrived on our very early flight at around 8.30am (Dam time) and as we were not able to check into our hotel until around 10 we headed for breakfast. I came across a recommendation on Wish Wish Wish's blog about a little place called Paper Planes which is really central and serves up egg and soldiers for breakfast. Reading that was just the temptation I needed to pay a visit. This place is great and has a real contemporary yet homely rustic feel to it. It seemed to be a place where locals drank their morning coffee and caught up on emails. For us it was the perfect pit stop to fuel our bellies and get a caffeine kick in order to tackle a full day of exploring.

With a full stomach we walked over to our hotel which was situated right next to the Vondelpark. We stayed at the Hotel Filosoof during our trip and fans of 'The Fault in our Stars' will know this as the hotel from the book. The hotel was great and the staff were incredibly friendly. The hotel is a little further out then the main city hotels, but if you are prepared to walk or cycle during your trip then it's a great little spot to stay.

On Day One, after dumping our cases, we set off to find the famous I AM AMSTERDAM sign. The sign is right behind the Rijksmusuem and was pretty busy with everyone scrambling to take the iconic photo. Eventually I managed to hoist myself up on to the letter S as I wanted a S for Saint (my surname). I will admit I did not look in any shape or form graceful as I clambered up and back down, but hey at least I got the shot.

Whilst in Amsterdam there is always something that catches your eye wherever you look. Whether it be colourful street art, a spotty moped or humongous amounts of cheese.

A great little spot we found on the first day and perfect for a pit stop pint was the Sluyswacht, which is a pub that is wonky and looks like it is leaning to the right. This place is over 300 years old and is a real afternoon sun trap. The great thing about Amsterdam is that they serve up bowls of cheese chunks to go with your drinks. This is definitely a tradition I think we should adopt in the UK. Move over olives and nuts and hello bowls of cheese!!

No trip to Amsterdam is complete without a walk through the Red Light District. Whether you are there to just peruse or participate, it really is a place that has to be seen to be believed. With the occupants of the red light booths knocking on their windows, to the smells coming from the coffee shops this place really takes it up a knotch after dark. I won't delve too much further but just be sure to take a walk if you ever in the area.

Stay tuned for more Amsterdam themed posts in the next few days.

Thanks for reading, back soon.

What's in my suitcase?

I type this post excitedly as I count down the days until I am off on another adventure. Back on a plane, off to explore somewhere new. This time its Amsterdam.

On Thursday morning I will be flying out for 3 days in the Dutch capital. To the land of tulips, clog shoes, bicycles and canals, and I cannot wait. Not least because it will settle the niggling wanderlust that has been shaking my ankles since I got back from Munich last November.

I thought I would share a little insight into what I will be taking with me for the trip.

Tartan Scarf from Zara / Topshop Jeans / Breton Stripe tee from New Look / Maggs London make up Bag / Biker boots from New Look / Denim Shift dress from New Look / Chunky Knit sweaters

If you like to be super organised when going away then I recommend you download the Trip List app which is free from the app store. The app allows you to utilise pre-prepared lists or create your very own, tailored to whatever type of trip you are going on.

Items are clearly categorised: clothing, documents, electronics, family, medical, miscellaneous, outdoors, tasks and toiletries.

Items can be ticked off with a tap of the screen and then they disappear from the list and into your checked items list.

The geek in me seriously loves ticking things off the virtual list as they go into my case.

Well worth a download if you are off on a trip in the near future.

Stay tuned for more about my Amsterdam advernture in the next few days. Thanks for reading.

Back soon, Nic x

Photo of the Week - 28th February

So I was meant to post this yesterday but my hangover rendered me incapable of doing anything apart from making a cup of tea. It was PJ's, blanket and marathon film session for me instead.

Anyway, February has now been and gone in the blink of an eye but here is my photo round up from the last week of February.
